Helping your child learn at home
Parent / carer support from home is vital in helping your child on their learning journey at Bryn Awel Primary School. You can easily become more actively involved in your child's learning by talking to the class teacher about how to support your child's learning and development, this is not just in the home but in the outdoors and wider community. The links and information below will guide you. All of our children have regular opportunities to share their experiences with you which is often through Class Dojo or Twitter. You can also do the same by posting a photograph or message to help them share their learning experience with their peers and teacher. Please see below our reading leaflets.
Reading:
- Spending time reading with your child for 10 minutes every day, makes a real difference.
- Choose a variety reading material e.g. books, comics, annuals, leaflets etc.
- Learners in Phase 1 (infants) have a reading record book so remember to write in their reading diary each time they read at home!
- Phase 2 (juniors year 3-4) also have home reading record books. Year 5 and 6 are awarded Dojo points for each novel they read.

Talking:
- Talk about the stories and text, words and numbers that you see around you.
- Encourage your child to talk about new vocabulary, characters and mathematical concepts such as How much? How big? and How many?
- Search for shapes and patterns in everyday objects and the world around you while you go on walks or to the shops.
- Involve your child in everyday tasks that involve literacy and numeracy – cooking, playing or watching sports, paying for the shopping, planning a trip or playing a board game with the family or with friends.
- Visit the wider community, use your local library where you’ll find a lot of information, support, computer access, and activities and events. Many museums and galleries are interactive offering lots of opportunities to talk.
Writing:
There are several different stages that a child will go through as they begin to write and develop their skills. Children will do this at their own pace and in their own time. There are many opportunities to develop this skills in the home, encourage your child to write and design things for a range of different purposes such as shopping lists, invitations, thank-you letters, e-mails, or ‘to do’ lists.

Science & Technology
Children love to find out about themselves and how things work. Science and technology allows children to wonder why? Technology includes using tools and materials to make exciting projects but also computer science where children can code. Minecraft for Education is an exciting tool. Minecraft: Education Edition can be downloaded from the Minecraft: Education Edition website. All children have free access to through their Hwb accounts once you have downloaded the game.

Health & Wellbeing
Health and Wellbeing is an essential part of our children's growing. It is important that they lead healthy lives with access to sport, the outdoors and also keeping their minds healthy. This can be done in a wide variety of ways, by taking time to just be quiet in a calm place and maybe trying out Yoga. A Healthy diet is also a key part and helping with preparing meals at home will engage our children in food.
